A recent Sunday Times article discussing innovators, included how air conditioning has transformed the way people live in such a profound way.
It explained how the vital initiative was taken by Willis Carrier in 1902. In that year he was just 25 years-old and working in a lithograph facility in Brooklyn and it was a suffocatingly hot summer.
He developed an electrical system for cooling, circulating and cleaning air and controlling its humidity. After the Second World War, mainly thanks to Carrier Engineering Corporation – which he founded in 1915 – air conditioning became widespread in homes and workplaces. It gave a huge boost to productivity and comfort. Importantly, air conditioning (including filtration, humidification, cooling and disinfection) can be used to provide a clean, safe, hypoallergenic atmosphere in hospital operating rooms for example and other environments where proper atmosphere is critical to safety and well-being. Yet, poorly maintained systems can promote the growth and spread of microorganisms and reduce air quality in general.
A correctly maintained system offers greater energy efficiency, improved comfort, will result in fewer unplanned callouts and repairs and will prolong the life of your system.
We all have a wonderful opportunity to benefit from this ground-breaking innovation. And for normally less than 1% of the cost to replace your system, you can help to ensure your staff, customers, visitors and students enjoy a safe, clean and efficiently maintained environment.
